Cambridge, UK – 4colors Research has joined the Industrial Decarbonization AI Coalition (IDAIC), a network based in London and Dubai that works to accelerate industrial decarbonization through the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The company brings expertise in advanced algorithmic decision-making, AI-driven optimization and quantum computing to the coalition.
Founded in Cambridge in 2016, 4colors Research develops optimization algorithms that help industrial and commercial organizations make better decisions across supply chain, manufacturing, logistics and energy operations. Its approach combines classical mathematical optimization with AI methods and, increasingly, quantum computing techniques, targeting the class of problems that standard solvers cannot scale to handle.
At 4colors Research, we believe that better optimization algorithms are a powerful — and often overlooked — lever for industrial decarbonization: even modest improvements in how factories, fleets, and supply chains are run translate directly into lower energy use and lower emissions. Why optimization matters for decarbonization
The link between optimization and emissions is direct. A schedule that wastes less machine time, a fleet that covers fewer miles, and a container loaded to make fuller use of its capacity all reduce energy consumption as a consequence of running better. Because these decisions recur continuously, improvements compound across a year of operations.
This is the argument the company has made consistently: the same operation, planned with a better algorithm, produces a measurably better result without new capital equipment. Applied at industrial scale, that efficiency shows up on both the cost line and the emissions line.
Background
4colors Research has a record of independent external validation. Its production and transportation planning algorithm took first place in the Airbus and BMW Group Quantum Computing Challenge, and a logistics optimization algorithm was selected as a finalist in a Renault Group competition. In October 2025 the company was named a semifinalist in the XPRIZE Quantum Applications global competition sponsored by Google Quantum AI, selected as one of 20 teams from more than 130 international submissions.
It has since been awarded an Innovate UK Growth Catalyst grant to commercialize its quantum-ready AI optimization platform for manufacturers and logistics companies, and was selected by Airbus for a proof-of-concept project applying quantum computing to production planning, supply chain and logistics optimization. The company holds a contract with the UK Space Agency for space domain awareness optimization, and has received an NQCC SparQ grant for quantum-accelerated aircraft loading optimization. Its client base includes Huawei Technologies and the UK Ministry of Defence.
